They would say, “You know, every guy who loses his job these days wants to go and open up an automotive repair shop. They usually start in their home garage helping friends. But before you know it I find myself with 5 to 10 new competitors in my market. And they are whittling away at my customers, growth and profits.”
Automotive repair marketing was easier back then. You slapped a quick and easy ad in the local coupon packet mailer and business would come in the door. However, it was mostly the wrong kind of business.
The customer would come in and hand you their automotive repair marketing postcard. You would do the oil change, and car inspection and try to sell them additional seriously needed work. But most of them would never buy. Even though the safety of their family was shouting at them — do it – and do it now. And of course, you would never see them again. I remember back in 1984 when I started my automotive repair marketing business. I had worked at the Stewart-Warner Corporation in Chicago, in the Alemite auto repair products division. And I had also done (straight commission sales) in retailing in that area as a young man. I well knew the frustration of low income customers. It’s hard to get ahead financially.
But then, I went to work with my Dad as he developed the Mr. Coffee marketing program in the early 1970’s. We got Joe DiMaggio as our spokesman and sold $50 coffee makers against $14.95 percolators and captured 50% of the coffee maker market the first year! Dad knew exactly what he was doing. It’s where I learned how to advertise to high income consumers.
